In our region, the infant mortality rate for black babies is far higher than for white babies. Our community goal is to improve infant mortality rates in families of color and low-income families to 6.0 per 1,000 babies by 2025. Babies of color are up to 4.5 times more likely to die before their first birthday. In the Battle Creek-Kalamazoo Region, the infant mortality rate for black babies are up to 4.5 times higher than the rate for white babies. Our community goal is to improve infant mortality rates in families of color and low-income families to 6.0 by 2025.

The infant mortality rate (the number of infants that die before their first birthday out of 1,000 live births) is a recognized measure of the health and well-being of children and the overall health of a community.
